What about Pure Entertainment?

I noticed in the reading from Sellnow, it seemed like she was saying that all Popular Culture has an underlying meaning. She used some Communication and Ethical Theory's to break down those different parts and explain how they affected viewer.

I understand and see what Sellnow is explaining. But what about watching something for the entertainment of the story?

Is it possible to just enjoy the movie or show, and not be effected by the morals or musing of the characters involved? Can a person come out of a theater unchanged from any feature film?

At first I said "Yes", I didn't think it always would affect a person. But when I thought back to recent viewings of films like "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" and the spectacular "Guardians of the Galaxy". I believe it might be virtually impossible for a viewing of a film to leave anyone without some small change in their way of thinking.

What do you think? Can you think of a film or tv series where you were changed after what you witnessed?

  1. I am always put into a different mind set after watching a movie. The events of the movie stay fresh in my mind for a few days atleast. Not so much when I watch a movie at home, but definately in a theater. -Wyatt

    1. Wyatt, I get the same thing. I have found myself thinking and talking about what has happened in a film I've watched for days and days after. Just like you said. But it doesn't matter for me if its at home or the theater.
