Hegemon examples in pop culture by Jennifer Sasala

Hegemony is an indirect form of government, and of imperial dominance in which the hegemon rules geopolitically subordinate states by the implied means of power, the threat of force, rather than by direct military force.

Hegemony can also be engaged to evaluate different types of conflicts within pop culture. It can also be used to explore and explain conflicts involving ethnicity, disabilities, racism, etc.

As I was surfing the internet for examples of hegemon, I found a link on YouTube. The link shows commercials that we watch everyday on television, on how everything is based on more modern, high tech, and civilized events. The first commercial you will watch on this link is that "Bigger is Better" commercial. Everyone agrees with this commercial because bigger is better.

  1. Why is it that we feel bigger is better? I mean we can see the influence it has on kids. Isn't it interesting to think the influence commercials have on us even when we were little. I can remember wanting the newest toy because it was the coolest of course. But why? Is it because we want that social acceptance or is it just because the product is appealing to us or the commercial makes it appealing to us?
